Pet Portrait Classes

Check out the Gallery to see some of Anne’s student’s work.

Online Classes

Do you have a photo of a favourite pet or animal that you’d like to make into a quilted fabric collage? You’ve come to the right place! Now, you can learn everything you’ll need to know from the comfort of your own home.

I offer three classes, one for each phase of the process:

  • From Picture to Pattern – how to prepare a photo, make a pattern from a photograph of a pet or animal and prepare a foundation for the collage. This step sets the stage for your collaged portrait.
  • Fabric Collage – everything you need to know to make a realistic looking raw edge, fused fabric collage and a complementary background.
  • Quilting and Finishing – how to prepare for quilting, then quilt the portrait, plus three ways to finish the quilt.

Anne guides you step-by-step with videos, photos and clear, easy-to-understand instructions.

Anne is a wonderful teacher and her bubbly enthusiasm brings out the best in each student. You will learn about value and this is the heart of her class. Anne will encourage you to dig deep to create a masterpiece….one that will make you smile each time to look at it!!

MARG, FABRIC COLLAGE STUDENT

In-Person Classes

I offer two options for live, in-person classes: a 2-day class or a 3-day class.

Two Day Class

In this 2-day ‘no-sew’ class students will create a fused raw edge fabric collage from their own photograph of a pet or animal. Sorry, no human faces for this class. Students will submit their chosen photo for review in advance of the class to insure it is suitable for a fabric collage portrait.

On Day 1 you will learn some tricks for making a pattern from a photo, how to judge the relative values in your fabric choices and how to choose the best fabrics for your portrait. After transferring your pattern to a foundation, you will begin the collage by assembling the eyes and nose. I will demonstrate and guide you in making these look realistic. By the end of Day 1, you will be well on your way, choosing fabrics and constructing your portrait on the muslin foundation.

Pet Portrait Workshop Day 1, pattern prepared and portrait started with realistic eyes.

On Day 2 you will continue where you left off, selecting and applying fabrics to flesh out the 3D portrait and refining details in the eyes and nose. In the afternoon, I will demonstrate various ways to make a background, what threads and needles to use and how to quilt and finish your portrait. There won’t be enough time to finish your portrait in class but you’ll have learned all you need to complete it at a leisurely pace at home.

Pet Portrait Workshop Day 2, Portrait well on its way.

Three Day Class

In the 3-day class, we will follow a similar path as the 2-day option but learning about quilting and finishing the portrait is shifted to Day 3 (which most students will do at home once they complete the collage). This option allows more time for working on the collage and/or the background on Day 2.

On Day 3, you will practise several stitching designs on a sample to find what works best for your portrait. At the same time, you will audition different types and colours of thread and choose the ones that will enhance the portrait. You will sketch out a quilting plan based on the results of the quilted sample and then, with a plan and your threads in hand, you will have the confidence needed to quilt your portrait and background.

On Day 3, I will also demonstrate several ways to finish the quilt: binding, facing, mounting on a canvas. Students can continue working on the collage and the background as time permits.

  1. Do you ever do an online class? Your technique would be wonderful to try on a quilt portrait of my brindle Picard. As I am in Arizona and Covid is still with us thought I’d ask about an online class…thanks!

    1. Hi Gayle,

Are you still thinking of making a portrait of your brindle? I’m please to say that the first course has been launched. Opening dates for registration and links:

March 1: How to Make Your Own Pattern.
March 29: Pet Portraits: Fabric Collage
April 26: Pet Portraits: Quilting and Finishing

I hope you’ll sign up. We are ‘live’ in course #1, How to Make Your Own Pattern and if you sign up for the others, I’ll let you know as soon as you can enroll in course #2, Fabric Collage and course #3, Quilting & Finishing.
